Martie is Expecting! Dixie Chick Martie Maguire is pregnant, she told PEOPLE on the red carpet for the Nobelity Artists & Filmmakers Dinner in Austin to benefit the Nobelity Project Sunday. "I'm very excited," Maguire, 38, says, adding, "We know what it is – it's a girl." Maguire, 38, is married to Gareth Maguire, a professor. Their first children together were twin daughters Eva Ruth and Kathleen Emilie, who were born in April 2004. "I'm feeling good now, although I wasn't!" Maguire jokes. "Carrying one instead of two will be much easier." Natalie in Arkansas An effort to free three young men convicted in the lurid 1993 slayings of three 8-year-old boys is gathering speed, with rock stars and other celebrities taking up their cause and about 150 supporters rallying Wednesday on the steps of the Arkansas Capitol. At the Capitol, sympathizers including Natalie Maines, lead singer for the Dixie Chicks, unfurled a long banner of postcards asking for the men to be released. "You want to do anything you can to right this wrong," said Maines, whose earlier criticisms of President Bush outraged many country music listeners. "I'm just amazed that these guys are still in prison and have turned into men in prison." The Associated Press - 12/20/07 |

'The Simpsons' Whistle Dixie (Chicks) In a Grammy acceptance speech earlier this year, Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks quoted Nelson from The Simpsons ("HA ha!"). Now she and her bandmates are becoming even more animated: They recorded a guest spot last month for the Fox comedy. The story line involves the return of country singer Lurleen Lumpkin (Beverly D'Angelo), who is reunited with her father. Alas, her father swipes one of Lurleen's songs and sells it to the trio. When the Chicks find out about his scam, well, let's just say they're not ready to play nice. The episode is slated to air in the spring. EW: Hollywood Insider - 11/15/07 |

The Night A Chick Dropped A Bomb EMILY ROBISON, one of two sisters who founded the Dixie Chicks, admits she was instantly concerned when, on the eve of the Iraq invasion in 2003, singer Natalie Maines made her comment about being ashamed George Bush was from Texas. "Not so much like 'Oh, we're going to get in trouble'," the songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist says from her home in San Antonio. "But just 'Oh my God, Simon [Renshaw, the band's manager] is going to talk to us'." "The tone of the country was, if you don't march in line and follow, follow, follow, you're not patriotic. We were already grappling with that. We were talking every day about what was going on in the Middle East leading up to the war." "I got a little flushed when I heard her say it. But then the show was over and I didn't think anything of it until a couple of days later when it hit the wires." The Sydney Morning Herald - 07/19/07 |

Snippet of Junichi's interview with Emily "I would love for us to be able to pare down and go out and do theaters, not so much for financial reasons, but because of the enjoyment of doing a different type of room. That’s why I loved doing VH1’s “Storytellers.” It’s such a different experience and a different kind of show. As an artist, I’d love to mix it up. I don’t want to be forced to scale down, but we have to start getting comfortable with the idea that we can do it like that and still be just as good." Exclusive Interview - 05/31/07 |

Natalie writes about Rick "After making a list of our favorite records, we discovered that a guy named Rick Rubin produced most of them—everyone from the Beastie Boys and the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Tom Petty and Johnny Cash. Who was he, we wondered, and would he be interested in working with three hicks, I mean chicks, from Texas? I didn't know what to expect at our first meeting. When I asked other people what he was like, the word guru consistently came up. I had horrifying visions of banjo meditation and a Dixie Chicks album inspired by a sense of inner peace. I wasn't up for either of these things. To my relief, neither was he. " The Time 100 - 05/04/07 |

Chicks Continue Country Chart Reign The Dixie Chicks still aren't getting any country radio airplay for music from their latest CD, Taking the Long Way, but their post-Grammy sales surge has lasted long enough to keep them at the pinnacle of Billboard's country albums chart. Digging Deep Rick Rubin praised the trio for standing their ground and not backing down from their instincts, which may help explain why the songs have such a crystalline, emotional kick that comes through whether you're a country fan or not. "All they tried to do was write the best songs they were capable of and really tell their truth and make a real personal album," Rubin said. "Dig deep and really spill their guts. And the fact that they were able to do that tells me there must have been some level of confidence there, because it's very difficult to do that." MTV.com - 02/07/07 |

Chicks Honored By USA Today The Dixie Chicks latest CD, Taking the Long Way, was named Album of the Year by USA TODAY in its Dec. 26 Year in Review. It was a calculated risk that paid off," wrote the national newspaper. The USA TODAY reviewers noted that even though the group had alienated many country fans with their 2003 anti-President Bush statements, they defiantly forged ahead with an album that did not beg for forgiveness. "But throngs of new fans . . . were enthralled by the stance and, more important, the rich, textured music the trio and producer Rick Rubin cooked up," the story adds. CountryWeekly.com - 12/28/06 |

There's not going to be any preaching on stage; we've never done that. I'm just ready to get back to that fan connection. Taking the Long Way back to the spotlight The Dixie Chicks are Taking the Long Way back to the spotlight May 23. Long Way will be the Chicks' first studio album since 2002's Home— and the first since singer Natalie Maines' remarks about George W. The first track, which Emily Robison calls "autobiographical," is called Not Ready to Make Nice. Other songs on the Rick Rubin-produced album address issues such as Alzheimer's disease (Silent House) and infertility (It's So Hard When It Doesn't Come Easy). USA Today - 03/09/06 |

Coming in April 2006 -- New Album! Thanks to collaborations with members of the Jayhawks, the Heartbreakers, Chili Peppers, and omni-producer Rick Rubin, the Chicks just made...a rock album? ''It sounds more like '70s Eagles than System of a Down,'' reassures banjo slinger Emily Robison. Co-writing all the songs allowed the trio to talk about what they're calling the incident (their 2003 adventures in patriotism inspired ''Not Ready to Make Nice''), and breaking up with country radio (''Lubbock or Leave It'') let them experiment. ''We feel free,'' says front-gal Natalie Maines (center, with Martie Maguire and Robison). ''We go into this thinking, No one's going to play it — and it's fine. We made it for people who want to hear it.'' Entertainment Weekly - 01/20/06 |

Interview Snippet with Rick Rubin Next, more reluctantly, Rubin pops in an even rougher mix of his work with the Dixie Chicks. "We don't have the harmonies done yet, so you're really going to have to fill in a lot, mentally here," he says. The first track he plays begins with an ominous, acoustic bit reminiscent of Neil Young, building into an angry, wailing crescendo. "Instead of making a country album that had a rock side," he says, "we wanted to do a rock album that leaned country, like Petty or Gram Parsons." 9/22 Issue of Rolling Stone - 9/10/05 |

Work, Work, Working Hard "Since last Spring (amid the much needed family time), we have been writing like mad-women trying to get as much material together as we can. There's nothing like a good 'ol fashioned radio ban/political broo-ha-ha to get our creative juices flowing! We should have done that a long time ago....just kidding. We plan to go into the studio sometime in March out on the west coast. Get a new vibe, collaborate with some great people, and just work, work, work until the album is done." Most Likely To Make New Fans The Dixie Chicks charmed when they joined James Taylor on stage and brought his usually dull ''Sweet Baby James'' to life with sweet countrified harmonies; they also worked wonders with their sassy version of Dylan's ''Mississippi.'' And frontwoman Natalie Maines came up with a priceless explanation for her refusal to take back her infamous comment about being ashamed that President Bush is from Texas: ''He'd just call me a flip-flopper, and I know he doesn't like flip-floppers.''
